Lebogang Mashile is a South African poet, playwright, performer, recording artist, and activist whose work has defined the landscape of contemporary poetry in her country for over two decades. Born in the United States to exiled South African parents and raised in Johannesburg, Mashile’s artistry bridges continents and histories, blending lyricism with fierce social commentary. She is the author of the award-winning collection In a Ribbon of Rhythm and Flying Above the Sky, and the creator of acclaimed stage works such as Venus vs. Modernity. Her voice has graced books, plays, music, film, and television, consistently amplifying feminist and Pan-African narratives. Honored with numerous awards, Mashile continues to expand the boundaries of spoken word, most recently through large-scale performances that fuse poetry with music, visuals, and technology.
