Thabiso Mohare


Thabiso ‘Afurakan’ Mohare is a Johannesburg based Spoken Word Artist, Arts Entrepreneur,  award-winning Copywriter, Arts Projects Manager and Communications Strategist. He is the co-founder of the African Youth Literature Institute and the Word N Sound Live Literature Movement – a development project promoting innovation and excellence in writing and performance.

Afurakan’s work has been featured on many local and international stages including Poetry Africa, Africa Cup of Nations Opening Ceremony, Rottotom International Festival and Ake Festival. He has produced the ‘Writing A New South Africa’ series for BBC4 and his poem about Nelson Mandela titled “An Ordinary Man” was commissioned by NPR. 

His first collection of poetry, The Broken men Chapbook which engages with toxic masculinity was published under Vanilla Pod and RYB (Re Ye Bala) Publishers in 2017.
