Competition: Poetry Africa  

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Win a cash prize of R1000 and the opportunity to perform at the Poetry Africa festival in October.

From February till September, we’ll be announcing a theme and accepting entries for Poetry Africa’s monthly competition. Each month, Poetry Africa’s jury will select a winning poem which will win R1000 and the poet will be a finalist for the 2023 Poetry Africa festival.

February Theme: Mother Tongue: Vernacular is Popular.

In the spirit of celebrating UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day (21st February) and appreciating South Africa’s linguistic diversity, poets are invited to submit a video reciting an original poem that speaks to the theme Mother Tongue: Vernacular is Popular. The video can be in any official South African language and must be no longer than 3 minutes.

Instructions

Read the instructions and eligibility criteria and fill in the submission form. In the form, be sure to upload a Google Drive link to your video. Submissions must contain the FULL NAME of the poet as well as AGE, GENDER, and LANGUAGE of the poem.

Eligibility and rules

Poet must reside in South Africa.
Age 18-35.
Poets may only submit one poem per month for the competition.
Poems may be in any official South African language.
Video must NOT exceed 3 minutes in length (maximum 10 seconds extra will be permitted).
By submitting an entry, you consent to Poetry Africa sharing your poem on our social media platforms.
Poetry Africa reserves the right to share or not to share any of the submissions.

Closing date: Sunday 26 February 2023

Judging criteria:

Quality of poem.
Relevance to monthly theme.
Style & Impact of performance.
Originality.

One overall winner from the finalists will be selected by the public and invited to perform at the Poetry Africa festival. The Poetry Africa festival will cover travel, accommodation and per diem costs as well as pay the poet a performance fee.
