Slam Competition (Semi-Finals)

In 2002, Poetry Africa’s Schools Outreach Programme was extended to include Poetry Slams that were coordinated by Eric Hadebe (South Africa), Jill Battson (Canada), Jayne Fenton Keane (Australia) and Jürg Halter (Switzerland). A year later, at the 7th Poetry Africa Festival, the Slam Session was added to the official roster of events, with the following description:

“Dynamic and fast-moving, and usually emphasizing audience involvement, a set number of poets square off against each other, and against the clock, presenting their poems in strictly administered time-frames, and in a series of rounds. Slam poetry combines poetic excellence, spontaneity and competitive sharpness”.

This year marks the 20th iteration of the Slam Poetry Competition! We are excited to present this much anticipated component of the festival’s programme in partnership with the French Institute of South Africa. We cast our net far and wide to attract entrants from across South Africa to participate in the first-ever staging of the competition outside of Durban. In this session, 10 semi-finalists who have been selected from our country-wide call, will compete in front of an international panel of judges for one of five spots in the final, which will be held in Durban on the 15th of October.
