Slam Jam Final! (Slam Competition)

‘It’s the architecture of it, it elevates your performance.’ – Quaz Roodt on Slam Poetry

Slam poetry fuses spoken word, competition, time pressure and live audience participation to offer an exhilarating experience of poetic performance. Historically rooted in the Négritude Movement, this form of poetry centres social issues, and befittingly speaks back to our thematic focus for this year. This is the 20th Poetry Africa Slam Poetry Competition, and it will be hosted in partnership with the French Institute of South Africa. Five finalists, selected from a country-wide call to participate, will compete in the Slam Jam in Durban for the coveted title of National Slam Poetry Champion. These finals will differ slightly from previous slam competitions, as the winner will be chosen by an esteemed international panel of judges, comprising of Philip Meersman (Belgium), Christie van Zyl (SA), Andrew Manyika (Zimbabwe) and Luleka Mhlanzi (SA). The winner will walk away with R22 000 and an all-expenses paid international trip to represent South Africa in the World Poetry Slam Championship.
