Schools Poetry Competition

This popular component of the festival programme presents learners with an opportunity to showcase their poetry writing skills. Entrants are invited to submit original poems and winners will receive cash and book vouchers, generously sponsored by Adams Campus Books. 

Adjudicators for the English category are Andrea Voges, Gina Zuma and Mbuso Kunene.

Adjudicators for the Zulu category are Nomfundo Xolo, Nonkululeko Magwaza and Thandeka Ngcobo.

First Place: Africa & The Sun by Amanda Gwamanda (Durban Girls’ High School)

Second Place: To Fail by Ozioma Onyeka (Montarena Secondary School)

Third Place: My Colour is Colourless by Xolile Luthuli (Durban Girls’ High School)

Zulu Category

First Place: Azibuye Emasisweni by Lungelo Nxumalo (Dloko High School)

Second Place: Qhakaza Qhawekazi Lami by Nosipho Cele (Crossmoor Secondary School)

Third Place: Baba Ubofika by Amahle Mjoli (Harding Secondardy School)

School Visits

Poetry Africa coordindates a school visitng programme that allows learners to interact with the festival poets, who stimulate and cultivate an interest for both poetry writing and performance amoung leaners.

The schools to be visited for 2019 edition of Poetry Africa (during the festival) include Clairwood, Danville Park Girls’ High School, Durban Girl’s College, Hillcrest High, Phambili High and St Mary’s.
