Poetry Africa has contributed in moving poetry off the page and onto the stage in the country, launching the careers of many critically acclaimed performers and writers. Poetry Africa strikes a balance between literary poets and emerging voices of dynamic performers in an effort to remain true to existing traditions and be at the cutting edge of lyrical expression today. Poetry styles to be seen on the Poetry Africa stage include izimbongi, hip-hop, rap and slam poetry, all with a focus on indigenous languages.

Underpinning all these festivals is a strong focus on schools engagement and community engagement whereby the CCA develops strategic relationships with community centres and organisations for collaborations around each of the festivals. To date, we have set up significant partnerships with communities in KwaMashu, Inanda, Groutville, Umlazi and Wentworth. We continue to have a strong relationship with the BAT Centre in Durban and often host the prestigious closing night at this venue.

Poetry Africa also involves itself in ad-hoc poetry festivals, conferences, concerts, exchange projects, training programmes, information exchanges, and in Pan-African and international cooperation.
